    In October the Council will consider the Secretary-General’s report on the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC), due on 30 September, as well as the final report of the Group of Experts on the DRC sanctions. The mandate of the Group and the sanctions regime expire on 30 November. MONUC’s mandate expires on 31 December.

    The Council is expected to consider the Secretary-General’s report on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), due on 30 June. The Council is expected to be briefed by the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for the DRC, Alan Doss. The mandate of the UN Organization Mission in the DRC (MONUC) expires on 31 December.

    The Council is expected to visit the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as part of its trip to Africa, at press time scheduled from 14 to 21 May. There was no Council meeting scheduled at press time. But the DRC Sanctions Committee is expected to consider the interim report of the Group of Experts due on 15 May.

    In April the Council is expected to consider the Secretary-General’s report on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the UN Mission in the DRC (MONUC), due on 31 March. The mandate of MONUC expires on 31 December.

  • On 17 February the Security Council is expecting a briefing on the humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The briefing will be at an open meeting of the Council and the UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, John Holmes, is expected to talk about his recent visit to the DRC.

    The Council is expected in December to renew the mandate of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC), which expires on 31 December and take stock of the situation in eastern DRC in the light of the ongoing crisis and its decision to expand MONUC. Possible options are discussed below.

    The dramatic developments in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) suggest that the Council will continue to watch the situation closely. It remains to be seen, however, whether the Council will agree to include the issue in the Council’s November programme of work.

  • The Council is expected to convene a meeting later in the week to adopt a presidential statement on the recently renewed hostilities in eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

    The Group of Experts on sanctions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is expected to submit its next report to the DRC Sanctions Committee by 15 August. The Sanctions Committee may report to the Council after considering the Group of Experts’ report.

    The Council will consider the structure and activities of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) based on the conclusions of the Council mission to the DRC on 7-8 June and the Secretary-General’s quarterly report. The mandate does not expire until 31 December. A Council presidential statement is therefore possible at this stage.

    The Council is expected to renew the sanctions regime on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as well as the mandate of the Group of Experts, which both expire on 31 March. The Council is also expected to receive the next regular report of the Secretary-General on the UN Organisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in late March.
