    The Council will receive the Secretary-General’s plan, due by 15 January 2016, for “appropriate action to deter and respond to any escalation of violence in and around Juba, in order to effectively protect civilians, and to protect critical infrastructure in Juba”, in accordance with resolution 2252 on the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). At press time, it remained unclear when the Council would convene to discuss the Secretary-General’s plan.

    In December, the Council is expected to adopt a resolution renewing and revising the mandate of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), which expires on 15 December. Prior to this adoption, the Council is expected to hold a briefing, followed by consultations, on three documents: the Secretary-General’s report on UNMISS’s activities in South Sudan from 20 August to 9 November; his report reviewing the mission’s mandate and recommending potential future support for the South Sudan National Police Service and Joint Integrated Police; and his letter containing an assessment of the UN’s role in providing support for security to key infrastructure.

    Council members continue to follow events in South Sudan closely. While no Council meetings on South Sudan are currently scheduled in September, it is possible that this issue could be addressed during the month, given the anticipated need to adjust the mandate of UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) following the signature on 26 August by President Salva Kiir of the peace agreement proposed by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). The mandate of UNMISS expires on 30 November.

    In late August, the Council is expected to hold a briefing, followed by consultations, on the Secretary-General’s report on the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and on the work of the South Sudan Sanctions Committee. A representative of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, and Ambassador Cristián Barros (Chile), chair of the 2206 South Sudan Sanctions Committee, will brief. (At press time, the mid-term report of the Panel of Experts was expected on 28 July, and the UNMISS report was expected by 17 August.) The mandate of UNMISS expires on 30 November.
